I reached way, way, way, way, way back in my art vault to retrieve this little jewel. I painted this thirteen years ago when I first moved to LA. Hard to imagine it has been that long. I clearly remember the evening I arrived in Los Angeles.
A good friend and I drove down from Seattle. We arrived at what was to be my new home in West Hollywood in the evening. Seemed like a nice enough neighborhood.
Upon my arrival my new roommate Michael told us that two nights before someone had fired five shots into the building next door. He went on to tell us a neighbor had been pulled into the alley by her home and was sexually assaulted three weeks ago. Michael himself had been held up at gun point the previous week and was so freaked out that he slept with a baseball bat in his bed. And to top it off, Leif Garrett lived right down the street!
I about pooped my pants hearing all this.
The next day I cautiously ventured out and walked around West Hollywood. I walked up and down Melrose Ave and saw all the shops. It all seemed pretty good. In the back on my mind though was all the crime that had taken place in and around my new home.
Now on a completely shallow note, I was amazed at the level of physical hotness that exists in LA. It's pretty top tier.
I remember sitting at my desk the very first week I was here and doing this painting. It was my way of processing all the chaos, hotness, fear, excitement, dread, and anticipation that came with my new surroundings.
You can see more of my work here.
This is painted with watercolor, gouache, and acrylics on a 30" x 22" piece of Rives printmaking paper.
I love your paintings. Absolutely awesome!
Cheers,
Aman
