Commission accomplished! Someone who purchased a painting from me last year, found a piece on my website and asked if I could make something in that direction and feel for him. The oil on canvas painting he liked I'd done in 2001 when I'd moved back to Cali after a time in NYC and it served as my goodbye to the endless stream of colorful people I'd see roaming the streets of Manhattan. It was really fun revisiting this style and finding new meaning in these characters. Very grateful to those who support my work.
I'll admit I'm not the most in touch when it comes to sporting events. I knew the World Cup was happening but that was about the extent of my knowledge. I was in a Sports Authority a few days ago looking for some undergarments for a body paint project and that's when I saw the FIFA World Cup logo for the first time on some giant display.
And it seemed like a great face paint opportunity. So I first enlisted the help of my beautiful friend Monica and this is the fun we had.
She let me give her the Mariah Carey hair treatment here. :)
And because a girl needs her options, I put her in this fro wig.
Thank you Monica! Also wanted to do that face paint on a guy so I got my friend Khalif, who I've body painted now 7 times, and here's what we came up with.
No wig needed for him, that's his real hair and it's real magic.
Thanks for viewing my face paint fun. Have a look here for further bodyart work. http://www.davidgilmorestudio.com/
A big thank you to my reader Patrick who commissioned me to do a portrait of an important person in his life for an important person in his life. Hugh Metzler was an actor with the Quannapowitt Players, Inc. community theater in Reading, MA. From the company's website:
It is with a heavy heart that we must pass along some sad news. Hugh Metzler, a long time life member of QP and fixture both on and off-stage, passed away on August 14, 2012. His presence will be sorely missed. He will always be remembered for his many performances on stage, as well as his generosity and friendship off.
Patrick asked me to create a portrait for Hugh's wife which wouldn't be just a straightforward painting, but would like it to have some background detail that spoke to Hugh' love of acting. So I used pencil, pen, and ink and placed the theater's logo in the lower corner.
Happy to report this protrait was well-recieved. Patrick also purchased this original acrylic on paper painting from me last year.
Thank you so very much Patrick for including in this lovely and thoughtful project.
My friends Steve and Don opened their first frozen dessert location recently in Marina del Rey, CA called Snow Flower Ice. They make shaved ice which is inspired by their travels in Taiwan and the stuff has the texture of frozen cotton candy. Magic! I was very honored to create a mural in the front portion of their space. A couple things to work around: the entrance wall has a large photo of the shaved ice which needed to stay in place, the walls are heavily textured, and the opposite wall had three framed information boards and a fourth to be added shortly. Here's what I came up with....
And so it begins...... decided to make the large photo a thought bubble.
Also as their concept stemmed from travelling in Taiwan, I chose to make a mascot or a face of Snow Flower as this lovely lady. And created this very colorful wave of scrolling detail to flow through the entryway.
Is she looking at me?
Now onto the other side which is a longer wall.
Oh these textured walls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And that's that!

Wow, I'm behind on sharing some of my work...... At the end of November, I painted a mural in Nidor Vapor Gallery in Venice, CA. It's a combination: vapor (e-cig) seller and gallery. Very Venice Beach. The area I painted is in the vapor lounge and as such, I created five large heads exhaling vapor. It's at 74 Market St.
