This would be posting number four about my nephew's ongoing fashion adventure with his mannequin. As previously mentioned, he just turned 9 and recently got a female display mannequin which he named Martinique. Every so often I get a little email treat from him showcasing an outfit or design he's created. A few days ago I received a photo of an extremely fashion forward cocktail dress he designed and created from scratch. Using two scraps pieces of fabric and only one safety pin, he formed this Project Runway win-worthy design. Remember, he's just turned nine.
I called him immediately and asked about his process. He casually said, "Oh.... I had an idea and then I just made it." I gushed about how great the dress was and how I could see someone actually wearing that on the runway. I told him I thought that in nine years when he turns eighteen, he should audition for Project Runway and he appropriately said, "Cool." I went on to tell him that I've been featuring Martinique on my blog and several other sites have posted her pictures and that those postings have generated some very supportive comments and emails. He was quite for maybe a fraction of second and then excitedly shouted, "Cool!!! Martinique's famous!"
Here's Martinique on the runway showing off my nephew's couture gown.
A day later my email inbox was graced with the following photo of a smartly dressed Martinique wearing a snappy just got back from my private Pilates class in the Hamptons with my dear friend Martha Stewart outfit. That Martinique, she's so well connected.
A flirt-y, strap-y cashmere top paired with sweats--- why not? If it works it works.
Yesterday my nephew and Martinique began filming a remake of High School Musical using iSite on the home computer. He's calling his feature Elementary School Musical. :) He sent a photo of himself in head to toe glamour from the filming. I'll only show the feet, but let me assure he you, the rest is fierce beyond belief. Here's my nephew in some very Ivana Trump goes yachting in St. Tropez kicks.
I'll have to tell the rest of the story about his filming and about his 12 year old brother's reaction to finding him in a dress when he got home for soccer practice. It's an interesting study in family dynamics.

That's just incredible, first that he's only nine and second that he feels comfortable enough to throw on a pair of heels! His family (yours) must be so liberating for this little mini designer to be. Good for him.

Bravo! I just walked across the street to Trader Joes and passed a dress shop, there was something similar in the window. So your nephew is definately onto creating some great fashion style. Dang. Martinique dresses better than me. I am duly humbled! She looks very chic in her Hampton's wear. *sigh* My nephew only likes video games. He wouldn't know the first thing to do with a mannequin. How sad. You are a lucky uncle!

Martinique is totally fierce and I think your nephew has more talent than any of the Project Runwayers this season. The show is a total snooze this season. Heidi should recruit your cousin soon!

Yes, yes, more Martinique, please!
As I have said before, it really is refreshing to see that there are parents out there who let their children be themselves and express themselves how they would like to. If this is what he is capable at creating at age 9, by the time he's out of college, he'll be unstoppable at designing! Keep up the great work, little guy...can't wait to see what you create next!!
