This is another one from my archives which I painted back in 1998. I had been living in Los Angeles at this point for about two years and was endlessly fascinated by the celebrity culture here and the obsession with trying to look like one. The place I worked was the epicenter of vanity as far as I was concerned. I would constantly encounter people who were trying as hard as possible to dress, style their hair, plump up their lips, have the right cell phone, whatever "it" was to appear as though paparazzi should be chasing them. I did a series of these gouache on paper paintings depicting groups of people all doing the same thing. Here it's a cocktail soiree where everyone is smoking including a topless dancer in the background. Another in this series would include three women all wearing the same dress to a cluster of celebrities all with Jennifer Aniston's haircut from Friends.
